Twitter first made major news with this now landmark photo/tweet that really got people to understand the value in how twitter can effectively communicate a significant event to a large group of people, in a very short amount of time.

Now Conan Obrien, in his hiatus from television, has started something of his own, a network of twitter accounts connected to Obrien all communicating to each other.

It began with his account @conanobrien and he quickly gained followers. Shortly after he choose one “random” person to follow and announced:

I’ve decided to follow someone at random. She likes peanut butter and gummy dinosaurs. Sarah Killen, your life is about to change. -@conanobrien

Since @conanobrien announced she was his “random” Twitter pal designee, Sarah has been showered with presents and attention, going from three followers to 12,713 in 24 hours. Strangers have practically planned her entire wedding for her, and someone sent her a new Apple computer. That was Matt from the Florida-based company, Hornblasters, by the way, who came to the rescue with an I-Mac when Sarah’s Webcam malfunctioned and it looked like she was going to have to cancel an MTV News interview via Skype Friday night. – http://latimesblogs.latimes.com

So let’s get this straight, Conan follows Sarah Killen (@LovelyButton).

Sarah’s Mom creates a twitter account @SarahKMom

Then there was @KillensSquirrel which is a squirrel that lives in Sarah’s backyard created by Conan.

Conan’s other accounts on twitter: Freckles, Squirrel, Sharpie, Monkey, Taurus, and Beard.

Sarah’s twizzler has a twitter account @KillensTwizzler (seems to run by Conan as well)

Now the “Grandma to 8 kids including Sarah Killen.” (@Sarahsgmalee) has a twitter

and Sarah’s fiancé (@badghandi89) also references @conan which may or may not be an account operated by Conan but is not active. Could also just be he didn’t type out his full name as well.

Then I also ran across this account @CoCosATMcard which seems to be in the circle of communicating with all of the other “Conan” presences. Then I found @ConansPeas @ConansATMCard @CoCosMoustache – all not having anyone of the account above following them. So one can only conclude they have been created by fans.

Confused?

I think this is just the beginning of what we can expect to see in terms of creative uses of twitter and celebrities leveraging their following and keeping fans to keep interacting with him. What other advantages do you see coming out of this, leave your comments below.

Update: in a tweet from @KillensTwizzler today (3/9):

I just hit @ConansMonkey in the back of the head with a @ConansPeas spit ball. @ConanObrien, you kids are out of control!

So it appears that @ConansPeas is in fact a part of this group. Stay tuned.
